  • Announcing:  A New Musical

On June 26 and 27 at the Kinlochbervie Village Hall, KLB pupils will stage the school's first ever musical - 'A Calamitous June'.  Rehearsals are well underway, with a dedicated team of staff and pupils supporting what will be a real showcase of talent.   Almost every pupil in the school is involved, showing off their creativity, collaboration and commitment to this event. Dances have been choreographed, songs practised and perfected, and the staging has been designed and built.

The show is loosely based on the Western musical 'Calamity Jane' but is set in North West Scotland and is a collaboration of Miss Nairn (Music) and MIss Meiklejohn (English).  Songs have been adapted from a wide range of musicals including Hairspray, High School Musical, Grease, Wicked, Rent and, of course, Calamity Jane.

  • Voice in a Million

In March the Pupil Choir and 4 assisting staff travelled to London to take part in the Voice in a Million, an event for which they had been rehearsing for months.  The choir performed live at Wembley Arena along with 5,000 other young people from across the U.K.  The aim of the event is to raise awareness of fostering and adoption in the U.K.

As well as singing at Wembley, the group made good use of their time in London by packing in as much as possible including a visit to the Houses of Parliament with a meet and greet session with local MP John Thurso, seeing two West End musicals (Matilda and Wicked), attending a musical theatre workshop and spending an afternoon at the Harry Potter Studios.  In addition they explored many of the city's top sightseeing spots such as Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, the London Eye and Downing Street.

After the trip, the choir participated in a school concert where they sang and presented a report on their trip.

  • Climate Week Challenge

Eight S3 pupils entered the national Climate Week Challenge in March with one of our teams (Iona Laing, Olivia Corbett and Alick Elrick) winning in their age category (14-16 years).  They competed against thousands of other people from across the U.K.

The aim is to encourage people to develop creative ideas to help the environment.  The challenge is only revealed in the morning and must be completed by the end of the day.  This year the task was to develop an idea that would help people use less energy heating buildings and water.

The school's winning team proposed a house design that would capture the energy used for heating from sustainable sources including a ground source heat pump, passive solar heating and a polytunnel and feed that energy into the house.

The full story is featured in the Northern Times edition of 2 May 2014 (p 10).

  • Hygiene, Healthy Eating and Activity in Primary Schools

S5 pupil Mark Dorrian has been delivering Shinty coaching sessions to P5-P7 pupils in Durness, Kinlochbervie and Scourie primary schools as part of the 6-week long HHEAPS programme (Hygiene, Healthy Eating and Activity in Primary Schools).

The HEAPS programme was initiated by a number of sports organisations including Scottish Rugby and the Scottish Football Association and aims to promote integrated messages about food safety, healthy diet and exercise to primary school pupils.  In our area the initiative has also been supported by Camanachd Association.

Each of the 6 sessions consists of a one-hour teacher-led class followed by a one-hour sports coaching session with a qualified coach.

Mark is well qualified to coach shinty having completed his UKCC Level 1 Coaching Certificate last year along with 8 other members of Kinlochbervie Camanachd.  He is also a valued member of the high school team.  Outside of school he plays league Shinty for Loch Broom Camanachd (based in Ullapool) and football for Brora Rangers Under 17s.

Mark's coaching has been very well received by both pupils and teachers in the area primary schools.  View a pictgure of Mark and the P5-P7 pupils from Kinlochbervie Primary School in the sidebar to the left or by clicking here.

  • Robert McBeath

For several years the school has been involved in an ongoing project gathering information on the life of Robert McBeath, a boy from Kinlochbervie who became a Victoria Cross winner in World War 1 and died only a few years later in Vancouver, Canada when as a member of the Vancouver Police Department, he was fatally wounded while apprehending a criminal.

For KLB HS, it started in 2006 when a group of S4 pupils did a project on his role in World War 1.  This led to an exhibition about his life in 2009 and the building of a memorial cairn in Kinlochbervie.  We formed links with the Vancouver Police Department who were our hosts in 2010 when a group of pupils visited Vancouver and participated in a memorial ceremony to fallen officers.

When McBeath won the Victoria Cross in 1919, there was a fundraising drive to honour him.  Donations came from all over Sutherland and further afield in Scotland.  In February of that year, he was presented with an inscribed gold watch from the people of Sutherland and over 367 in war bonds which McBeath intended to use to buy land for a farm

After 95 years, the watch has re-surfaced in Vancouver.  The tale is fascinating.

  • Community Christmas Concert

The concert was a great success.  Thank you to everyone on stage and all the helpers. Thank you too to everyone in the audience who sang with such enthusiasm and supported our fundraising efforts.

The donation bucket at the door raised 236 for the Joanne F. Fotheringham Memorial Fund for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).  This money will directly benefit young people in the Highlands and our pupils will be given the opportunity for cardiac testing in the spring.

We also raised 190 from the raffle for school funds.

  • BBC Children in Need

This year we raised 288.36 for Children in Need.  The event was organised by Laxford - one of our 3 house groups.  In addition to paying 3 for the pleasure of not wearing school uniform, they sold cakes at morning interval and ran "hunger games" in the afternoon where student/staff teams competed in various food games such as being the first to eat a lemon.
