Kinlochbervie High School

Newsletter 1 - September 2009

Vision Statement

Kinlochbervie High School is an inclusive community.  Excellence in education, the welfare, security and happiness of all pupils and staff are our priorities.

Kinlochbervie High School endeavours to take the needs of the individual into account.  We aim to provide pupils and staff with the skills, experiences and qualifications they need to give them choices in their progression through life.

Standards and Quality Report

This annual report has been issued to pupils with this Newsletter.  Please contact Dr Smith if you wish further information on any aspect of the report.

SQA Results

This year’s results were very good with some excellent individual performances and very few disappointments.  Further information is in the Standards & Quality Report.

Staffing

At the very end of last session Debbie Gunn was appointed as the new Depute Rector to replace Kate Aitken.  Debbie started in her new post in August and has already made a significant impact.

Mr David Cholet is now our teacher of French and has settled in to school very well.

Sarah Kish resigned at the end of the session.  As we are currently overstaffed, she will not be replaced.

Alban Gottfrois has just arrived to take up the post of French Assistant.  The post is shared with Farr High School.

McBeath Project

A ceremony to unveil the cairn built by pupils as a memorial to Robert McBeath VC was held recently and an excellent exhibition of memorabilia and pupil work was displayed in the school.  Although there were some press reports here, the reaction in Vancouver was incredible.  We were featured on Canadian television with a slot on CBC News and the Vancouver Chief of Police has written thanking pupils for their efforts, enclosing small gifts.  He also sent a video he made about the life of McBeath and the work of our pupils.  We hope to be able to display the exhibition further afield and there are even hopes for some pupils and staff to visit Vancouver.  The school web site will have much of the exhibition materials uploaded in the near future.

Discussions With Other Agencies

The school holds regular meetings with other agencies such as educational psychology, social work and health.  At these meetings we discuss concerns we have regarding our pupils.  Therefore there could be times when a pupil’s problem is shared with others outwith the school.  If the problem is thought to be significant and another agency becomes involved, we will always inform parents.  However, if no further action is taken, parents may not always know their child was mentioned.

Health Promoting Schools

We are the first school in Highland to maintain our status for the third time.

Uniform

The final Newsletter of last session included the notice below.  Pupils were also given this information at Assembly and some were told individually.

Recently some pupils have drifted away from the uniform code we introduced in August.  Overall the standard of uniform is fantastic apart from trousers.  Therefore, over the summer would parents please ensure that any new trousers bought are black, with no frills or add-ons.  That means plain black trousers: no stripes (even thin grey ones), no flashes, no added big shiny buttons – no extras!

Unfortunately there are still some pupils who do not conform.  This is unfair on the vast majority who are well turned out day after day.  We will start to insist that pupils who are not appropriately dressed wear a pair of plain black trousers from the stock the school holds.  We are willing to help any parent by supplying trousers on a permanent basis – please contact Dr Smith.
