After a long campaign by parents for the provision of secondary education locally, Kinlochbervie High School opened with 25 pupils in 1995 (S1 and S2). Previously, pupils attended Golspie High School on the East Coast and boarded during the week in hostels. Prince Charles officially opened the school on 22 September 1995.
A new year group was added every year and the school now offers all six years of Scottish secondary education. There are 90 pupils and 18 teaching staff (full and part time).
In addition to high quality purpose built classrooms, the outside grounds contain a floodlit all weather playing pitch ('Astroturf') and a pupil-built garden. The school's location is ideal for a range of outdoor including hill walking and water sports. The school itself faces Loch Innes and has been used by pupils for kayaking and raft races.
The school is proud of its community links. All facilities are available for out-of-hours community use; particularly popular are the floodlit pitch, the games hall and the well equipped fitness room. The building is also home to the Community Education Office and the North West Training Centre; the former supports local community groups and the latter provides a variety of evening and Saturday adult classes. These classes have ranged from computer training to art workshops to kayaking instruction.
